Rites for Mrs. Schlichting, 76

Klemme, Iowa--Last rites were held at Immanuel Evangelical & Reformed church here Saturday, for Mrs. William Schlichting, 76, a resident of the Goodell and Klemme vicinities for about half a century. Mrs. Schlichting passed away last Thursday, Sept. 20, after a lengthy illness. Conducting the funeral service was the Rev. Vernon E. Jaberg. Pallbearers were Carl Green, Amos Hanson, Verdi Harris, Martin Burrs, Donald Newman and James Petersen. Burial was in the Goodell cemetery.

Mrs. Schlichting, whose maiden name was Bertha Kemp, was born in Germany June 18, 1875, to Mr. and Mrs. William Kemp. She came to America at the age of 13 and lived with her parents in their new home at Fort Dodge. In October, 1868, she was married to William Schlichting. The young couple spent three years farming in Minnesota, then moved to Klemme. After residing here for three years, they moved to the farm 4 1/2 miles northwest of Goodell. There they lived until 1941, when they retired from active farming and moved to their home in Goodell. During the past half-century Mrs. Schlicting has been a member of the Klemme E & R church and has been as active as circumstances would permit. In recent years, because of her illness, she partook of Holy Communion in her home. She showed definite signs of failing health last January 1.

Surviving her are one son, Albert of Ventura; and two daughters, Mrs. Gilbert Kropp, Goodell; and Leona at home; three brothers, Frank and Theodore Kemp, Goodell, and Otto, Fort Dodge. She was preceded in death by her husband; two sisters, Mrs. Alma Lauden and Mrs. Martha Kemp; and one brother, Paul Kemp.
