Josephine Mary Heinen, of LuVerne, died on Monday, April 22, 2002, at the Kossuth Regional Health Center in Algona. She was 86. A Funeral Mass was held at the Sacred Heart Catholic Church, Livermore, on Friday, April 26. The Rev. Daniel Greving officiated. Burial was in the St. Joseph Catholic Cemetery, Wesley. Casket bearers were Alan Heinen, Kevin Heinen, David Heinen, Ken Bigelow, Dana Heinen, Michael Heinen, Tony Powers and Neil Carbaugh. The Garry-Roberts-Murphy-Schaaf of LuVerne was in charge of the arrangements.

Josephine Mary Heinen, was born on March 11, 1916 at Hardy, Iowa. She was the daughter of Peter and Frances Gertrude (Hines) Birnbaumer. She received her education at the District 3 Country School in Humboldt County. After her schooling, Josephine worked at home. On February 15, 1939, Josephine married Herman Frank Heinen at the Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Livermore, Iowa. The couple farmed in the Wesley, Corwith and LuVerne areas. They retired to LuVerne in 1983. Mrs. Heinen was a member of the Sacred Heart Catholic Church, Livermore, where she also belonged to the Ladies Guild. She enjoyed gardening and playing cards and belonged to a card club in LuVerne. Her children and grandchildren were her greatest joy in life.

Survivors include her children, Duane Heinen and wife, Sharon of LuVerne, Gerald Heinen and special friend, Annie Smith of Omaha, Nebraska and Norma Powers and husband, John of Cary, North Carolina; 12 grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; and a daughter-in-law, Penny Braverman and husband, Berny of Washington, D.C. She was preceded in death by her husband, Herman on March 19, 1999; her parents; an infant daughter, Diane Marie; a son, Roger; one sister, Lucille Steil; and two brothers, Leonard and Raymond Birnbaumer.
