BELMOND — Lucile Arvilla (Klassi) Chapman, 91, of Belmond, died Sunday (Sept. 28, 1997) at the Covenant Medical Center, Waterloo, after a brief illness of pneumonia. Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Thursday at the United Methodist Church, Belmond, with the Rev. Ken Fineran, officiating. Interment will be in the Belmond Cemetery. Visitation will be held from 5 to 8 p.m. today at the Dugger Ewing Funeral Home, Belmond.

Lucile was born to Samual and Elizabeth (Mauer) Klassi, on Oct. 18, 1905, on the family farm in Renwick, Iowa. Lucile lived on the family farm with her brothers and sister until graduating from Vernon High School in 1924. She attended Iowa State Teachers College (now UNI) in Cedar Falls, college in Boulder, Colo., finishing her teaching education at Drake University. Lucile taught school for 43 years without a single sick day, first at a one room school house in LuVerne Township, then teacher and principal at Goodell, Iowa, before teaching at Belmond, retiring in 1971. Lucile was very involved in the community and her church, United Methodist Church, with 50 years of service. Lucile was united in marriage with Grant S. Chapman, on Aug. 6, 1938, at the Little Brown Church in Nashua, Iowa. The couple made their home at 116 Third St. S.E., and lived there for their entire lives. Lucile and Grant enjoyed dancing, going to the Surf Ballroom every Friday night from 1937-1967. Lucile loved gardening, sewing and baking. She was well known for her delicious cinnamon rolls.

She is survived by her daughter, Karen L. Chapman, of Denver, Iowa and her fiance, Dick Hansen; a sister, Lena Wolf, Humboldt; two grandchildren, Stephen J. Stadtlander and his wife, Pam, of Trabuco, Calif., and Susan Kazarian and her husband, Kory, of Waterloo; and four great-grandchildren, Jesseca, Thomas and Sarah Stadtlander, of Trabuco, Calif., and Grant Kazarian, of Waterloo. She was expecting her fifth great-grandchild this January. Preceding her in death were her mother and father; siblings, Sam and Wilbur Klassi; and her beloved husband, Grant, who died June 10, 1997.
