Gerald Orton Gates, son of Arthur and Ethel (Pullen) Gates, was born December 16, 1924 in Central City, Nebraska. He attended school in Nebraska until his Junior year in high school when his family moved to Humboldt. Gerald graduated from Humboldt High School. Jerry was inducted into the United States Army on February 2, 1943 serving during WWII in the European Theater. He was hospitalized in Germany following an injury and was honorably discharged on March 26, 1946. On August 15, 1953 Jerry was united in marriage to Darice George in Jackson, Minnesota. To this union three children were born. Jerry farmed in northwest Iowa his entire life. He and Darice lived and farmed near Laurens for the past twenty four years. Jerry was a member of the United Methodist Church in Ayrshire. He was a member of the Archibald Southworth V.F.W. Post #3533 in Laurens and the Grace Masonic A.F.A.M. Lodge #519. Jerry participated in the installation of officers in the surrounding Lodges.
Jerry died Friday, September 22, 2006 at the Spencer Municipal Hospital at the age of 81. He was preceded in death by his parents; a daughter, Kathy Gates; and twin grandsons, Keith and Jonathon Gates. He is survived by his wife, Darice; his children, Gary Gates and his wife, Carla of Spencer, IA , Karen Halder and her husband, Louis of Spencer, IA, and Michael Gates of Minnesota; four grandchildren, Katie Gates, Thomas Gates, Matthew Halder, and Timothy Halder; a sister, Betty Lenning of Humboldt, IA; a brother, Donald Gates of Hardy, IA; as well as many other relatives and friends.
