June 1, 2007Erma L. Hanson, 94, of Detroit Lakes and formerly of Vergas, died Tuesday, May 29, 2007 in Emmanuel Nursing Home, Detroit Lakes. Erma Lois Enfield was born June 26, 1912 in Hardy, Iowa, the daughter of John and Anna (Buss) Enfield. She moved with her family to Illinois and then to Dubuque, Iowa. She moved to Minnesota with her parents and settled near Clitherall where they farmed. She was united in marriage to Robert Hanson Aug. 2, 1937, in New Effington, S.D. They made their first home in New York Mills where they started their family. Later they moved to Battle Lake where they rented and operated their own farm. About 1947 they moved to rural Vergas, purchased a dairy farm and together raised their four children. In 1977, Robert and Erma retired from dairy farming and they began traveling. Eventually, they decided to make southern Texas their winter home. They moved to Detroit Lakes. Robert died in December 2004. Erma was a member of St. Paul’s Lutheran-Loon Lake where she was active in the Ladies Aid. She enjoyed snowmobiling, gardening, fishing on Spirit Lake, cooking and traveling in their camper.
She is survived by a son, Richard (LaVon) Hanson of Detroit Lakes; two daughters, Roberta Osterberg of Estes Park, Colo., and Sandy (Terry) Stromberg of Erhard; 12 grandchildren, 15 great-grandchildren and one great-great grandson. She was preceded in death by her husband, Robert; a daughter, JoAnn Gulland in 2006; five brothers: Elmer, Roy, Glen, Melvin and Donald; three sisters: Iva, Mae and Edna; and two sons-in-law, James Osterberg and Clarence Gulland.
Service: 11 a.m. today in St. Paul’s Lutheran Church-Loon Lake, Vergas
