NEW ULM, Minn. - Jim Sanford, 66, of New Ulm, died Wednesday, October 29, 2008 at the Winthrop Good Samaritan Center. Funeral service will be 10:30 a.m. Friday, October 31 at the First Baptist Church in New Ulm with Dr. Robert J. Fuller, Jr. officiating. Burial will follow in the Mountain Lake Cemetery. Visitation will be 4 to 7 p.m. Thursday at Schmucker Funeral Service in New Ulm and one hour prior to the service at the church.

Jim Lynn Sanford, the only child of James "Don" and Winifred (Shockley) Sanford, was born February 4, 1942 in Creston, IA. He graduated from high school in Clarion, IA in 1960. Jim worked as a meat cutter and later as an inventory specialist, retiring in 2002. He was united in marriage to Sharon Swanson Kirk September 18, 1987 at the Mountain Lake Bethel Mennonite Church. The couple lived in Mountain Lake, MN and Mankato, MN before moving to New Ulm. Jim enjoyed time spent visiting with family and friends, playing cards and watching TV.

Survivors include his wife Sharon of New Ulm; children, Susan Birnbaum and her husband Ed, Steve Sanford and his wife Shelly, all of Fort Dodge, IA, Wendy Turgeon and her husband Todd of Minnetonka, MN, Brad "Sarge" Kirk of Richfield, MN, Tim Kirk and his wife Sheila of Mountain Lake, MN; 11 grandchildren; and uncle, Marv Thuman of Mesa, AZ. In addition to his parents, Jim was preceded in death by his stepson Randy Kirk; three aunts and two uncles.
