Muriel ‘Annie’ Dirks, 61, of Clear Lake, formerly of Thornton, Iowa, died Tuesday, Sept. 16, 2008 at Muse Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit. Memorial services were held Friday, Sept. 19, at First United Methodist Church, Thornton with Pastor Rose Calderon-Khan presiding. Interment will be at a later date at Meservey Cemetery, Meservey, Iowa.
Muriel Ann ‘Annie’ Dirks was born April 8, 1947 at Tama, Iowa, a daughter of Lawrence and Reva (Estel) Marlow. She attended schools in Tama and Mason City, Iowa. She was united in marriage with Jerry Allen Dirks on Aug. 20, 1966 at the First Reformed Church in Meservey. They raised their family in Thornton. Annie worked as a waitress and bartender at the Shady Beach in Clear Lake and the tavern in Thornton for many years. In 2006 Annie moved to Clear Lake where she lived at Apple Valley Assisted Living and spent the past two months as a resident of Good Shepherd Health Center in Mason City. Annie was a long-time member of the First United Methodist Church in Thornton. She enjoyed spending her time dancing and doing crossword puzzles. She greatly enjoyed her time at Apple Valley but the best times for her were those spent with her grandchildren.
Annie is survived by her children and their families: Todd (Violeta) Dirks and their children, Veronica and her son, Devon; Tim and John; Chris Dirks (Todd Ouverson) and her son, Braiden; Jeremy (Katie) Dirks and their son, Matthew; sisters and brothers, Maureen (Harlan) Leake, Mason City, Marjorie (Garry) Benson, Eldora, Iowa, James (Connie) Marlow, Charles City, Iowa, Jean (Gary) Conrad, Clear Lake; sisters-in-law and brothers-in-law: Ron (Judy) Dirks, Meservey, Doris Dirks, Mason City, John (Cindy) Dirks, Mason City, Jim (Nancy) Dirks, Clear Lake, Karen (Frank) Uhde, Thornton. She is the aunt of 22 and the great aunt of 46. Muriel Ann Dirks is preceded in death by her parents; husband, Jerry, in 1992; brothers-in-law, Bob and Louis Dirks; nephew, Scotty Dirks and niece, Jennifer Hamand.
