Mrs. Jane Umbarger, an early settler of the community, died at her home in this city last Saturday. She and her husband moved to a farm north of this city about sixty years ago and continued to reside there until 1898 when they moved to Melvin where she lived until the end. She was a good woman in every way and was a good neighbor, and was always ready and willing to assist with every good work as long as she was able. She had been poorly for some time due to illness incident to old age, but she was adverse to calling a doctor and her children and friends did not realize that her condition was serious. Finally she gave consent and the doctor was called. Everything possible was done for her but it was of no avail.

Louisa Jane Allen Umbarger was born Nov. 11, 1842 near Reading, Pa., and moved to this state when four years of age, and since that time has lived in LaSalle (Putnam) and Ford Counties of this state. On Nov. 4, 1859 she was married to Josiah Umbarger. All her life she has been connected with the church. She leaves three daughters and one son: Mrs. Ada Huxtable of Gibson City, Mrs. Hattie Deininger of Laclede, Mo., Mrs. Jennie Short of Goldfield, Iowa and Mr. Jesse Umbarger of Melvin. Twenty years ago next Saturday her husband passed away and six years ago her son Almond passed away. She leaves thirteen grand children and twenty-three great grand children. Her last hours were spend in her home in Melvin and she left this life January 19, 1929. She was 86 years, 2 months, and 8 days of age. Services were held at her home Monday afternoon, Rev.H.W. Harman of the Methodist Episcopal Church officiating. Internment was in the Melvin Cemetery.
