LUVERNE, Iowa — Lucille Smith, 87, died Wednesday (Jan. 12, 2005) at her home in LuVerne. Funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. on Monday at United Methodist Church in LuVerne with Rev. Remigio Panlaqui officiating. Burial will be in LuVerne Cemetery. Visitation will be held today from 4 to 8 p.m. at Garry-Roberts-Murphy-Schaaf Funeral Home in LuVerne.

Lucille was born on Dec. 13, 1917, near LuVerne, to John W. and Emma (Petersen) Kubly. Lucille attended LuVerne Consolidated Schools and was married to Lester E. Smith on Dec. 14, 1934, in Fort Dodge. Lester and Lucille farmed and lived all their married life in the LuVerne and Renwick area. The couple moved into LuVerne in 1962. Lester died on Feb. 3, 1987. Lucille worked part time at LuVerne Public Library and took great pride in caring for her lawn and flowers. She enjoyed quilting, playing cards, feeding and watching the birds, going for walks and visiting with her friends in LuVerne. Lucille was well-known for her lemon pies and rolls. She was a great fan of the Iowa Hawkeyes and enjoyed watching them play. She enjoyed babysitting, but her real joy was her grandchildren. She belonged to United Methodist Church in LuVerne as well as the Senior Citizens and Garden Club.

Survivors include her son, Kenneth Smith and wife, Carol, of Clear Lake; a daughter, Sharon Ites, and her husband, Gary, of Gravois Mills, Mo. Also surviving are 13 grandchildren; 22 great- grandchildren; and one great- great-granddaughter. Lucille was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Lester; a son, Gerald in 1980; a sister, Wilma Ruberg; and a brother, Melvin Kubly. Garry-Roberts-Murphy-Schaff Funeral Home in LuVerne is in charge of the arrangements.
