Leonard E. Root, 86, of Latimer, died on Wednesday, September 3, 2008, at the Franklin General Hospital in Hampton. Funeral services were held on Monday, September 8, at the Immanuel United Church of Christ in Latimer. Burial was in the Alexander Cemetery. Leonard was born on September 9, 1921 in Franklin County, to Frank and Ella (Steenhard) Root. He graduated from the Sheffield High School. He married Marcia Muir on June 15, 1944 at her parents home in Aredale. Leonard was a farmer and a member of the Alexander United Methodist Church. Leonard was preceded in death by his parents; brother, Harold; and sister, Helen. He is survived by his daughter, Charlotte (Harlan) Plagge of Montevideo, Minnesota; and son, Leon (Bev) Root of Latimer; seven grandchildren; and ten great-grandchildren.

September 9, 1921 – September 3, 2008Funeral Services for Leonard E. Root will be held Monday at 10:30 A.M. at the Immanuel United Church of Christ in Latimer, Iowa. Visitation will be held Sunday from 2-5 P.M. also at the Immanuel United Church of Christ in Latimer, Iowa. Burial will take place at the Alexander Cemetery. Rev. Tom Cofer will be officiating. Sietsema Vogel Funeral Home in Latimer will be in charge of arrangements.
Leonard E. Root, 86, of Latimer, Iowa, passed away September 3, 2008, at the Franklin General Hospital in Hampton, Iowa. He was born September 9, 1921, in Richland township to Frank and Ella (Steenhardt) Root. After graduating from the Sheffield High School he began farming. He was united in marriage to Marcia Muir on June 30, 1944, at the home of her parents in rural Aredale, Iowa. He continued farming in the Latimer area his entire life. He was a member of the United Methodist Church in Alexander, where he was an active member of the men's club. He was a member of the Latimer Community Club, Latimer Golf Course and Farm Bureau. Leonard enjoyed reading westerns and mysteries, playing golf, woodworking, playing cards and spending time with his family. He is survived by his daughter Charlotte & husband Harlan Plagge of Montevideo, Minnesota, son Leon & wife Bev Root of Latimer,
grandchildren Lisa and husband Duane Buehner, David and wife Jennifer Plagge, Debra Plagge, Nathan and wife Sheila Plagge, Tonya and husband Nick Zimmerman, Heather Root and fiancé Brian Hahn and Melissa and husband Chad Simmons and ten great grandchildren. Leonard is preceded in death by his parents, his wife Marcia, and his brother (Harold) and sister (Helen).
