Independence - Ethan "Ray" Brayton, 75 years old of Independence, IA, died Saturday, January 27, 2007, at his home following a long illness. He was born June 27, 1931, in Renwick, Iowa the son of Don Brayton and Leadayle (Gillespie) Brayton. He graduated from Somers, Iowa high school with the class of 1948, and then attended the Merchant Marine Academy in Mississippi. Later He earned a B.A. degree at Iowa State Teachers College in Cedar Falls, IA. On January 27, 1951, Ray was united in marriage to Marvel Jean Ramthun in Rockwell City, IA. They have made their home in Independence for many years. Ray worked in the meat packing industry first at Rath Packing in Waterloo and later at Corn Blossom Foods and Iowa Ham in Independence. He was a member of the Immanuel Lutheran Church in Independence and a member of the Independence Lions Club.
Mr. Brayton is survived by his wife, Marvel of Independence, IA, 4 daughters, Karen (Rick) Jensen of Independence, IA, Janelle Brayton of Independence, IA, Rita (Phil) Klendworth of Ft. Worth, TX, Carmen (Dave) Bussard of Des Moines, IA, also 1 son Brad Brayton of Independence, IA, 5 grandchildren, 3 great grandchildren and 1 brother, Bruce Brayton of California. His parents and 1 sister, Louana Williams preceded him in death.
Funeral services were at 11:00 a.m. - Tuesday, January 30, 2007, at the Immanuel Lutheran Church, Independence, IA, with Rev. Tom Jones officiating. The organist was Georgia Gray. Burial was at the Mt. Hope Cemetery, Independence, IA.
