Gladys Louise Groves, the daughter of Rudolph and Anna (Marshall) Penno, was born September 5, 1910, in South Dakota. She and her family moved to a farm near Woolstock, Iowa, where she graduated from Woolstock High School in 1927. She attended Iowa State Teachers College in Cedar Falls, Iowa, and graduated with a teaching degree. She taught for three years in country schools. In 1931, Gladys married Harry A. Groves of Eagle Grove and resided on the family farm until 1967 when they moved to Eagle Grove. She was a member of the United Church of Christ in Eagle Grove and throughout the years Gladys was very active in her church and in various community organizations. Gladys had many interests including sewing, baking, painting and gardening. She was a friend to many people throughout her entire life.
Gladys passed away Thursday, September 11, 2008, at Wright Medical Center in Clarion, Iowa at the age of 98 years. She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Harry in 2000; son, Kent A. Groves in 1993; three sisters and one brother. Gladys is survived by one son, Gary J. Groves (Linda) of Webster City, six grandchildren, two great-grandchildren; one sister, Charlotte Crim of Brownsville, Indiana, and a special niece, Mary Ann Kunert of Remer, MN. Memorials may be directed to the discretion of the family.
Funeral services will be Monday, September 15, 2008 at 10:30 a.m. at United Church of Christ in Eagle Grove with Pastor Jim Cunningham officiating. Visitation will be Sunday from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. at the Foust Funeral Home in Eagle Grove. Burial will be in Rose Hill Cemetery in Eagle Grove.
