Donald Dietrich Marty was born on December 13, 1926, on the family farm near LuVerne, Iowa to Edward C. and Anna Elmer Marty. He received his education at the Vernon Consolidated school near Renwick, Iowa, graduating from High School in 1945. After his schooling, Donald farmed with his father on the family farm. He served his country during the Korean Conflict in the U.S. Army. After his return from the service, Donald continued helping his father on the farm, where they also raised purebred hogs.

Donald was married to Donna Willey at the Methodist Church in Humboldt, Iowa on June 5, 1955. The couple lived on the family farm near LuVerne, where they farmed for the next 50 years. Donald was also a Garst Seed Corn salesman for a number of years. Donald was a member of the United Methodist Church in LuVerne. He was also a former Vernon Township Trustee and a Humboldt County Soil Commissioner. Donald was very community minded. He was Past President of the LuVerne Community Club, had served as chairman of the LuVerne Centennial Committee in 1980-1981, and was instrumental in purchasing and renovating the kiddie rides for the LuVerne town celebration. Through his job as a Seed Corn salesman, Donald traveled all over the world. He toured many countries in Europe, but his favorite trip was to Russia, where he met and made numerous friends. He very much enjoyed the Russian return visit to his home. Family was very important to Donald. He loved watching his children and later his beloved grandchildren participate in all of their various activities. Donald became a resident of the West Bend Care Center in West Bend, Iowa in May of 2008. He died there on Wednesday, August 20, 2008, at the age of 81.

Surviving are his wife, Donna, LuVerne, Iowa and his children, Barb Legler and husband, Charles and David Marty and wife, Diane, all of LuVerne, Iowa. Also surviving are his three grandchildren, Kristine Legler, Nathan Legler and Jessica Marty. He was preceded in death by his parents and his brother, Lawrence Marty.
