Mrs. Hefty is survived by her children and their spouses, Monte and Bonnie Hefty of Renwick, IA, Ronald and Eloise Hefty of Sioux Falls, SD and Joyce and Martin Fjelland of Clark, SD; grandchildren, Lee, Sara, Brian and Darren Hefty, Jannel Brueggeman and Kurt and Chad Fjelland; great-grandchildren, Zachary, Jetta and Mason Hefty and Halle Fjelland; step-grandchildren, Mark, Justin and Scott Faiferlick and Brad Stensaas, and step-great-grandchildren, Kelsey, Michael, Alyssa, Riley, Kierra and Jaden Faiferlick and Nicholas Stensaas. She was preceded in death by her husband, Peter; her parents; sister, Hazel; her aunt and uncle and cousins who raised her, Ole, Margaret, Joe, Selma, Oscar, Elmer, Mable, Alma, Conrad and Orville Larson; and daughter-in-law, Kathryn Hefty.

Ruth Margaret Hefty, the daughter of Harlan and Lena Erickson, was born on August 9, 1917. Lena died when Ruth was only 7 weeks old, so she grew up in the home of her aunt and uncle (Ole and Margaret Larson of rural Badger, IA) and their children (Ruth's cousins). She attended elementary school in Badger and high in Calendar, IA. She married Peter Hefty of Renwick, IA on April 8, 1939. They lived and farmed by Renwick until 1978, when they moved to their new home in Humboldt, IA.

Ruth was a member of the Renwick Evangelical United Brethren Church, which later joined with the United Methodist Church. When she and Pete moved to Humboldt, she joined the Faith United Methodist Church. She was active in the women's groups of both churches. She was a devoted mother and farm wife and carried countless meals to Pete and her sons during the busy farming season. She enjoyed baking, gardening and needlepoint. All her grandchildren prized her butterhorn rolls and kringla. In later years, she became an avid fan of the Iowa Hawks and the ISU Cyclones and enjoyed conversing with her grandchildren about the teams. Ruth passed away at the Algona Good Samaritan Home on June 23, 2004 at the age of 86.
