3 May 1876 -- July 1964

Lidderdale, Iowa - Funeral services for Robert Gobeli, 86, retired business and former mayor of Lidderdale, will be held at 11 a.m. Monday at the Huffman Funeral Home in Carroll. He died Friday at University Hospitals, Iowa City. Officiating at the rites will be the Rev. Jerry Grabher, associate pastor of the First Methodist Church of Carroll. Burial will be beside his wife in the Carroll City Cemetery. Graveside services will be given by the Independent Order of Odd Fellows Lodge No. 279 of Carroll, with Clyde Bayliss and Kenneth Schwarzenbach officiating. Friends may call at Huffman’s after 7 p.m. Saturday.

Mr. Gobeli was born May 3, 1877 at Weisenbach, Canton-Berne, Switzerland, a son of Christian and Anna Gobeli. In April 1884, after the death of his father in February of that year, he came to the United States with his mother, brother Gottieb and sister Anna, settling at Des Moines, He moved later to Meservey and in March 1909, to Lidderdale, which has been his home since. His marriage to Sophia Marie Paul took place at Thornton on March 10, 1897. For many years Mr. Gobeli owned and operated a harness shop and had other lines of business in Lidderdale, which he sold. Active in community affairs, he served on the town council and school board as well as being mayor for many years. He was member of he Evangelical United Brethren Church and for 63 years, a member of I.O.O.F. Lodge No. 279 at Carroll. He remained active until being hospitalized last January.

Surviving are his six children: Mrs. J. A. (Vera) Caffarelli, Omaha; Ralph R. Gobeli, Roanoke, Va.; Mrs. Paul (Myra) O’Mara, Lake City; Warren Gobeli, Fort Dodge; Clarence Gobeli and Mrs. Alverda Cottong, at home. Also surviving are 13 grandchildren, 30 great grandchildren and six great great grandchildren. His wife died on March 14, 1960.
