BELMOND - Russell E. Dougherty, 85, of Belmond, passed away Thursday (Aug. 14, 2008) at the Belmond Health Care Center. Mass of Christian burial for Russ Dougherty will be held at 10 a.m. Monday, Aug. 18, at St. Francis Xavier Church in Belmond with the Rev. Nils Hernandez officiating. Burial will be in the St. Francis Cemetery in Belmond. Military rites will be provided by the Belmond Honor Guard. Visitation for Russ Dougherty will be held from 2 to 7 p.m. today, Aug. 17, at the Dugger Funeral Home, 111 Luick's Lane S. in Belmond. Rosary and scriptural service will begin at 4 p.m. at the funeral home.

Russell Erwin, the son of Earl and Gertrude (DeNui) Dougherty, was born on Dec. 19, 1922, at Iowa Falls. The family moved to Clarion when Russ was five years old. He attended the Clarion schools, graduating in 1941. Russ and Maxine (Martin) were married June 7, 1948, in Clarion. They eventually opened a jewelry store in Belmond, moving there in 1949.

Left to survive Russ is his wife of 60 years, Maxine; sons, Dennis (Joan), of Belmond, Ron (Diane), of Ankeny, Steve (Val) and Randy (Kris) both of Belmond; brother, Dale (Irene), of Clarion; sister, Gerene Smith of Eagle Grove; grandchildren, Mark (Tammy), Phil (Christine), Brad (Amanda), Eric (Jayme), Jennifer (Joel) Eddleman, Jill (Todd) Sears, Katie (Tim) Barkema, Sara (Nic) Sailsbury, Neil Dougherty, Jacki, Chelsey, and Shelby Dougherty; 11 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents; brother, Loren; brother-in-law, Spencer; and infant grandson, Ryan.
