Tena Dirks, 86, of Thornton, died on Friday, March 1, 2002, at the Sheffield Care Center. Funeral services were held on Monday, March 4, at the First Reformed Church of Meservey, with Rev. Rodney Meester presiding. Burial was in the Meservey Cemetery.
Tena Boelman, was born on February 7, 1916 in Meservey, a daughter of Tony and Bernadine Dena (Koenen) Boelman. She was baptized on June 4, 1916 at the First Reformed Church in Meservey and attended Meservey schools. On May 8, 1936, Tena was united in marriage with Louis Dirks at the Parsonage of the First Reformed Church at Meservey. They made their home in the Thornton and Meservey areas. Tena worked for several years as a cook at a local restaurant. She was a life long member of the First Reformed Church of Meservey, where she had been active in the church circles. She enjoyed sewing and had provided clothes for all her family members.
Tena was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Louis in 1980; three sons, Robert, Louis and Jerry; grandson, Scott Dirks; one sister; and four brothers. Tena is survived by five of her eight children, Doris Dirks of Thornton, Ronald (Judy) Dirks of Forest City, Karen (Frank) Uhde of Thornton, Jim (Nancy) Dirks of Ankeny and John (Cindy) Dirks of Mason City; 23 grandchildren; many great-grandchildren; two daughters-in-law, Elsa Dirks of Republic, Missouri and Ann Dirks of Thornton; one sister, Bertha Trager of Meservey; one sister-in-law, Sylvia Boelman of Mason City; and a brother-in-law, Bob Smith of Mason City.
