Mrs. Anna Hovland was born at Moster, Norway Aug. 31, 1853. Her parents were Jacob and Kari Skimland, and she was baptized in the old Moster church. She came with her parents to America in 1857 who settled near Lisbon, Ill. They came to Iowa from Platte, Ill. in 1865 in a covered wagon drawn by oxen, there being 3 wagons in the company. It took three weeks time, but on Sundays no traveling was done as that was kept as "A Day of Rest." They first came to Christytown and lived with the Lars Grinden family for six weeks. Then the family moved to Huxley, where a farm was bought and a home built. She was confirmed by Rev. N. Amlund, being a member of the first class to be confirmed in Fjeldberg church.

March 18, 1880 she was married to Nels Henderson, who passed away in October 1894. On March 9, 1897 she married Andreas Hovland, who passed away Nov. 3, 1912. She leaves to mourn her passing 5 children and 3 step-children. They are Mrs. Hans Legvold, Northfield, Minn.; Henry Henderson, Frost, Minnesota; Mrs. O. J. Hovland, Story City; Mrs. H. Nosback, Ames and Louise at home. The step-children are Mrs. L.F. Baier of Ames, Mrs. John Helgerson of Jewell and Arthur Hovland, Inglewood, Cal; 15 grandchildren and 4 step-grandchildren, and 25 great-grandchildren.

She moved to Story City in the spring of 1909, and at that time her membership in Elim, Randall was transferred to Bethel church in Story City. She was a charter member of Bethany Ladies Aid. She passed away April 8 on the same date her youngest son, Albert Henderson, died in 1910. A step-son, Chris Hovland died Jan. 1, 1904. Mrs. Hovland was a sincere Christian, always reminding people with whom she conversed about seeking the Lord while he may be found. Blessed be her memory.

Funeral services were held Thursday, April 11 in Bethel Lutheran church in Story City, Rev. A.J. Bringle officiating. Truman Quam sang "Behold a Host Arrayed in White" and "The Old Rugged Cross." He was accompanied on the organ by Mrs. Arvie Jacobson. Burial was at Mamrelund cemetery. Pallbearers were P.A. Olson, Severt Sjurson, Lewis Braland, Carl Mathison and Sherman and Willie Wicks.

O. Legvold of St. James, Minn.; Justus Legvold of Eagle Grove; Mr. and Mrs. Edward Varo and John Johnson of Kanawha; Mrs. Oliver Vevle and Mrs. Rose Helgevold of Ft. Dodge; J.E. Richardson of Goldfield; Mr. and Mrs. Silas Thompson, Mrs. Severt Britson and Erling Shold and John of Roland; Mr. and Mrs. Gerhard Amdahl and Mr. and Mrs.Osmund Helgeland of McCallsburg; Mr. and Mrs. Nosback, Mr. and Mrs. L.F. Baier, Edith Baier, Mr. and Mrs. Carlyle Peterson and Susan Wicks of Ames; Mr. and Mrs. John A. Helgerson, Mr. and Mrs. Harvey Tungesvik, Janet and Paul of Jewell: Gerhard Hanson of Eagle Grove; Mrs. Richard Larson of Des Moines; Mr. and Mrs. Truman Quam of Boone; Mr. and Mrs. Lester T. Olson, Mr. and Mrs. O.J. Hovland and Mr. and Mrs. Alfred Christopherson, Ames.

Contributions amounting to $161 were given to various causes in loving memory of Mrs. Hovland, they being Bible camp $45; Bolivia mission $10; Sudan mission $10; Story City Memorial hospital $23; WCAL radio station $26; Jewish mission $9 and several others.
