Herman Schreur was called home Tuesday, November 27, 2007, to live with his Lord Jesus. He was surrounded by family and prayers during his brief illness of cancer. He was born July 2, 1924 to Lambertus and Uhlderika (Siemens) Schreur on the family farm in Kanawha, Iowa. Herm attended the one-room schoolhouse down the road; and in 1941 graduated from Kanawha High School. August 28, 1951, he married Edna Blank and together they farmed the family homestead, where they raised their four children. He enjoyed spending time with his family and helping his brothers on the farm. Herm was a member of the Kanawha Christian Reformed Church, where he served as a deacon and Sunday School teacher. He was one of the founding board members of the Kanawha Christian School. He loved to travel and each vacation began with his reading Psalm 121. Cherished family memories were recorded with his camera. As second tenor of the Schreur Brothers Quartet from 1943 to 1978, he endeared many gospel songs to our hearts. Retiring in 1990, he and Edna left the only home he ever knew and moved to Lynden, WA to be near their children and grandchildren, where they became members of Bethel Christian Reformed Church. For over 17 years they have been blessed with being together again as a family. Dad, your family remembers you for your kindness and life as a child of God.

Herm is survived by his beloved wife of 56 years, Edna; daughters, Dorothy (Mike) Waggoner, Janice Schreur and Barbara (Ken) Vander Veen; son, Paul Schreur; grandchildren, Angela (Jordan) Oliver, Brian Chicoratich, Amber & Kelsey Vander Veen; brother, Bill & wife Maylene; twin sister, Helen & husband George Eekhoff; brothers and sisters-in-law, Betty Schreur; Mariam Blank; Ray & Ann Blank; Lillian VanderPloeg; Ada Schoenwetter; Leona & Ken Sorenson and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by infant granddaughter, Maria Anne Chicoratich; brothers, George & wife Anna; Willem, Garret & wife Zelda and John; sisters, Mary and Jennie; brothers-in-law, Cecil Blank, Clarence VanderPloeg; Homer Schoenwetter and Don Marchand.

Visitation hours will be Thursday, Nov. 29, 4 to 8 pm at Gillies Funeral Home with family members present from 6 to 8 pm to greet guests. A graveside service will be conducted Friday, Nov. 30, 1:00 pm at Monumenta Cemetery followed by 2:00 pm funeral services at Bethel Christian Reformed Church, 11th and Liberty Streets in Lynden. Memorials in Herm’s name may be made to Whatcom Hospice, 800 E Chestnut St., Bellingham, WA 98225 or Lynden Christian Schools, 417 Lyncs Dr., Lynden, WA 98264.
