Funeral services were held for Mrs. John Baker Saturday afternoon, 1:00 at the Boughton Funeral Home and 2:00 o’clock at the Christian Reformed church near Woden with the Rev. Edward Bossenbrook delivering the sermon. Burial was made in the Christian Reformed church cemetery, near the church.
Jennie Abbas was born near Steamboat Rock, Iowa, September 17, 1878, a daughter to Edward and Jennie Jergens Abbas. She was baptized in infancy, and shortly after the family moved to the state of South Dakota. After a number of years the family moved to Wright County, Iowa, settling in what is now the Kanawha vicinity. The town at that time had not been established.
On March 1, 1899, Jennie Abbas became the bride of John Baker, the wedding taking place in the Wright County church in the vicinity of where the family resided. The Rev. Van Vassop united the couple.Mr. and Mrs. Baker went to farming in the home community. After leaving the Kanawha farm home they went to Woden, and in 1937 moved to their present farm home northeast of Britt. Mr. and Mrs. Baker observed their golden wedding anniversary two years ago. Mrs. Baker was a member of the Ostfriesland Christian Reformed church and a devoted Christian. She had been ill for many months and spent some time in hospitals. Death came Wednesday, May 2, while at her home. She had reached the age of 72 years, 5 months and 15 days.
Surviving are her husband and ten children, namely: Edward Baker, Mrs. T. R. (Anna) Seifert, Mrs. Henry (Helen) Smidt, Mrs. John (Emma) Appelhons, all of Britt; Ben Baker, Hayfield; Peter Baker, Garner; Mrs. Harm (Fannie) Katuin, Meservey; Albert and George Baker of Forest City; and Mrs. Alvin (Jennie) Hoefker, of Omaha, Nebr. Brother and sisters are Hemmo Abbas, Mrs. Emma Eekhoff, Mrs. Albert Baker and Miss Dena Abbas, all of Kanawha. There are twenty grandchildren and two great grandchildren. The parents, one sister, and three brothers preceded Mrs. Baker in death.
