January 21, 2002Mildred Nordstrom of Bellevue died of kidney failure Jan. 9, 2002, at Overlake Hospital Medical Center in Bellevue. She was 97. Born Jan. 29, 1904, in Kanawha, Iowa, she graduated from high school in Fertile, Minn., in 1922 and from State Teachers College in Bemidji, Minn., in 1927. She married Gunnar Nordstrom on July 30, 1929, in Fertile. She taught in a one-room schoolhouse in northern Minnesota until 1929. In 1954, she and her husband opened the Scandia Freeze Shoppe at Northeast Eighth Street and Bellevue Way, now the site of the Hyatt Hotel, and operated the business for 13 years. She was a longtime member of Pilgrim Lutheran Church and the Swedish Club, Seattle, where she was a member of the women's auxiliary of the Swedish Male Chorus, in which her husband sang. An avid gardener, she also enjoyed knitting and crafts and was known for her creative activities for children, which she learned from her days as a ''school marm.''
Survivors include her sons Bert Nordstrom of Bellevue and Carl Nordstrom of Lake Oswego, Ore.; her daughter Ann Melder of Sedro Wooley; sisters Frances Arnold of Union and Ruthe Ankovy of Eugene, Ore.; 10 grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.
A memorial service will be held at noon Saturday at Pilgrim Lutheran Church in Bellevue. Remembrances may be made to Pilgrim Lutheran Church, 10420 S.E. 11th St., Bellevue, WA 98004. Bleitz of Bellevue Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
