Fort Dodge MessengerHUMBOLDT - Verna D. Kennedy, 94, of Humboldt passed away July 6, 2008 at the Humboldt Care Center North. Funeral services will be 11 a.m. Wednesday at the Faith United Methodist Church in Humboldt with the Rev. Jan Burnett officiating. Interment will be in Indian Mound Cemetery, Humboldt. Visitation is from 5 to 8 p.m. today at the Mason- Lindhart Funeral Home in Humboldt.
Verna D. Kennedy, the daughter of Daniel and Anna (Nelson) Robinson, was born August 19, 1913 at Goldfield, Iowa and graduated from Goldfield High School. Verna went to summer school and begun her teaching career in rural schools at the age of eighteen. After teaching three years, she married Gerald Kennedy on June 1, 1934. They joined the United Methodist Church in Humboldt where Verna taught Sunday school for junior and senior high school youth for fifteen years. She also served as the Sunday school superintendent, worked with the Missionary Daughters, was a charter member of the Women's Society of Christian Service, served as District Officer of Missionary Education, and was active in United Methodist Women. Verna also spent several years as a 4-H Leader. Verna returned to school and graduated from Eagle Grove Community College and received her BA Degree from Drake University in 1968. She taught in Rutland and Humboldt Schools for twenty-one years. Verna was actively interested in all youth activities in church and school. She enjoyed gardening, sewing, and fishing. She especially enjoyed being with her family.
Verna passed away July 6, just short on her 95th birthday. She is survived by her three children, Gerald (Debra) Kennedy, Jr., of Pipestone, MN, Patricia (Gene) Johnson of Algona, IA, and David (Bernie) Kennedy of Coralville, IA; nine grandchildren; seventeen great-grandchildren; brother, Gary (Norma Jean) Block of Humboldt; sister, Beverly Williams of Overland Park, KS; several nieces and nephews; and devoted friend Bob Hansen. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Jerry; two brothers, Bud Robinson and Lowell Robinson; and sister Avis Wedge.
