Selma Hobbet Carlson, 97, of 715 Falconer St., formerly of 72 Durant Ave., died at 12:50 p.m. Monday (April 13, 1998) in WCA Hospital.

She was born July 18, 1900, in Leland, Ill., a daughter of Olle O. and Carrie S. Simonson Hobbet. She moved to Eagle Grove, Iowa, in 1903, graduating from Eagle Grove High School in 1918. She attended St. Olaf College in Minnesota, University of Colorado, Boulder, and graduated from the University of Iowa, Iowa City. Prior to retiring, she was an elementary school teacher for 42 years. Moving to Jamestown in 1928, she taught at R. R. Rogers Elementary for 34 years, until retirement in 1963. She was a member of Zion Covenant Church and its Ladies Aide Society, the New York State Teachers Association, Jamestown Retired Teachers Association, WCA Auxiliary and the Delphian Society.

Surviving are a daughter, Sonja C. Stahlman of Jamestown, two grandchildren: Richard G. Stahlman Jr. of Rochester, Mich., and Lisa A. Stahlman of Jamestown; five step-grandchildren: Karen Zalewski and Robert Hessinger, both of Erie, Frederick Hessinger and Richard Hessinger, both of Waterford, Pa., and Carl Hessinger of Boiling Springs, Pa.; tree great-grandchildren; 18 stepgreatgrandchildren; and three stepgreat-great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband, Morris I. Carlson, whom she married Dec. 1, 1934, and who died July 8, 1968; her stepmother, Hannah Berg Hobbet; a stepdaughter, Marian Hessinger; a grandson, Scott G. Stahlman; two brothers: Oscar and Carl Hobbet; and two sisters: Mary Hobbet and Anna Ganong.

A memorial service will be at 2:30 p.m. Friday in Zion Covenant Church. The Rev. Eldon H. Johnson, pastor emeritus, will officiate. Internment will be in Lake View Cemetery. Friends will be received following the service on Friday in fellowship hall at Zion Covenant. Memorials may be made to Zion Covenant Church or a charity of choice. Arrangements are by Lind Funeral Home.
