Investigators and Webster County Sheriff’s deputies look over the wreckage of a Ford Escort that was involved in a head-on collision with a semitrailer Thursday morning on U.S. Highway 169 near Lizard Creek Lane just north of Iowa Highway 7. The driver of the vehicle, Mark Patterson, of Fort Dodge, was killed in the accident. The highway remained closed for several hours.
A Fort Dodge man lost his life in a head-on crash that set a truck on fire and caused part of U.S. Highway 169 to be closed for about three hours Thursday.

The Iowa State Patrol identified the victim as Mark Patterson, 34.

State Trooper Neil Morenz said Patterson was driving on the wrong side of the road when his car crashed into a semitrailer. Morenz said investigators don’t know why Patterson was in the wrong lane.

The collision happened at 9:10 a.m. on Highway 169, about a half-mile north of Iowa Highway 7.

Morenz said Patterson was driving south in the northbound lane when his 1993 Ford Escort hit a 1996 Mack semi driven by Dennis Nelson, of Bonaparte. The shattered car stopped on the highway while the northbound truck went off the east side of the road and caught fire. Nelson, 55, used an extinguisher to attack the flames before firefighters arrived, Morenz said.

Nelson was unhurt.

Patterson was pronounced dead at the scene by Dr. Dan Cole, the Webster County medical examiner. Cole said Patterson’s body was sent to the state Medical Examiner’s Office in Ankeny for an autopsy.

Firefighters used hydraulic rescue tools to remove the car’s roof and doors to free Patterson’s body.

Highway 169 was closed between Highway 7 and Webster County Road D14 for about three hours. Even after one lane was opened to traffic, investigators and tow truck crews were on the scene until about 2 p.m.

Fort Dodge police and firefighters, Webster County sheriff’s deputies and Trinity Regional Medical Center paramedics assisted state troopers at the crash.
