BELMOND - John A. Ysker, 56, of Belmond, died Saturday (June 7, 2008) in an automobile accident. Funeral services for John Ysker will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Friday, June 13, at Luick Memorial Auditorium in the Belmond-Klemme High School with Pastor Samuel Schmeling officiating. Burial will be in the Belmond Cemetery. Visitation will be held from 4 to 8 p.m. on Thursday, June 12, at the Dugger Funeral Home, 111 Luick's Lane S. in Belmond, and one hour prior to the funeral services at the school.

John Allen, the son of Robert and Evelyn (Trapp) Ysker, was born March 2, 1952, in Windom, Minn. John was educated in the Windom schools, graduating in 1970. He then attended the Jackson Vocational School for two years in Jackson, Minn. John and Linda (Zerke) were married on June 23, 1972, in Estherville. They moved to Belmond in 1976 where John opened John's Body Shop. John was very active in the Belmond community. He was a long-time member of the Belmond Fire Department. He spent several years of service as a member of the Belmond Jaycees. John was also an active member of the Pheasants Forever group. He was a member of the Richland Lutheran Church in Thornton. John had many hobbies that kept him busy. You could often find him attending old car shows. He loved his old Case tractors and thoroughly enjoyed farming. His love of the outdoors showed in many different ways - from bailing hay to riding horses, hunting, trapping, and riding motorcycles. Highlights of his life, however, were times spent with family and friends.

John is survived by his wife, Linda; sons Nathan, Nolan (Julie), and Justin (fiancee Jennifer Goeman), all of Belmond; parents, Bob and Evelyn Ysker of Windom, Minn.; sisters, Kathy (Mike) Earhart of Grand Rapids, Minn., and Gail (Dennis) Craig of Alexandria, Minn.; sister-in-law, Linda (Richard) Paplow of Dundee, Minn.; many nieces, nephews, relatives, and friends. He was preceded in death by an older brother, Gary, and his grandparents.

One dead, two injured in weather-related accident

One man is dead and two other people were injured after a weather-related accident on Interstate Highway 35 Saturday.

John Ysker, 56, of Belmond, a passenger in a car driven by Justin Ysker, 33, also of Belmond, died in the accident, according to the Iowa State Patrol.

Heavy rain was falling at 10:50 p.m. Saturday as Justin Ysker drove north on I-35 near Williams. State patrol officials said Ysker appeared to have lost control after passing through water pooled on the highway and a vehicle driven by James Paulus, 61, of La Crosse, Wis., broadsided Ysker’s vehicle.

Justin Ysker and Paula Paulus, 55, also of La Crosse and a passenger in James Paulus’ car, were both injured. Justin Ysker was taken to the Hamilton County Hospital and then transferred to a Des Moines hospital. Paula Paulus was treated and released at the Hamilton County Hospital.
