FOUNTAIN, MN -- The funeral for Zella Estella Lucas will be at 2 p.m. Monday, June 2, at St. John Evangelical Lutheran Church in Wykoff, with the Rev. Peter J. Sestak officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery. Mrs. Lucas, 83, of Fountain, died Monday (May 26, 2008) en route to Saint Marys Hospital in Rochester.

Zella Young was born July 5, 1924, on her parents' farm in Belmond, Iowa. She was raised in the Rose Creek/Dexter area of Mower County. She attended high school in the Twin Cities and later, in 1981, graduated from Rochester Technical College as an LPN. She married Lloyd Lucas on Oct. 13, 1943, in St. Paul. The couple made their home on a farm in rural Wykoff. In 1980, they retired from farming and moved to Fountain in 1981. Mrs. Lucas worked at the Preston Care Center from 1976 to 1983, then with Fillmore County as a home health aide until 2000. She was a member of St. John Evangelical Lutheran church, was a Sunday School teacher, and was active in the Ladies Aid. She was also a member of the Wykoff American Legion Auxiliary, was a Gold Star Mother and a 4-H leader. She enjoyed gardening, her grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

She is survived by two sons, Dale of Lake City and Joe (Joan) of Stewartville; a daughter, Judy (Ed) Lee of rural Blooming Prairie; eight grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband on June 11, 1988; three sons, James, Bill and Dennis; and two brothers.

Friends may call from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. Sunday at Thauwald Funeral Home in Wykoff, and an hour before the service Monday at the church. The family prefers memorials to a charity of the donor's choice.

The funeral is scheduled for June 2, 2008 at 2 p.m. at St. John Evangelical Lutheran Church in Wykoff, with the Rev. Peter J. Sestak officiating, with burial in the church cemetery. Thauwald Funeral Home in Wykoff is in charge of arrangements.
