Julane Lenora, the daughter of Hans and Annie (Quam) Osheim, was born March 2, 1918, in Thompson, one of 14 children. She grew up and attended school in Thompson. Julane was confirmed in the West Prairie Lutheran Church in 1933. Her religion kept her strong throughout her life. It was while working at her sister's restaurant in Klemme that Julane met Henry Carolus. They were married April 5, 1936, at the Methodist parsonage in Clarion. They were married 69 years until his death in 2003. The family made their home and farmed in the Galt, Clarion, Garner, and Goodell area. For a period of time, Julane worked at the Belmond Care Center. Following their retirement from farming, they moved to an acreage north of Belmond. In 2000, they moved to the Belmond Retirement Apartments. Julane moved to the Belmond Care Center in 2005 where she made her home until her death.

Julane was an avid Hawkeye fan. She was also a person who kept up with politics and was willing to share her political views with others. She enjoyed playing cards, gardening, reading, stitching handiwork, playing bingo on Tuesdays at the Care Center, and doing crafts. Cooking was a favorite pastime where she was known especially for her cookies and potato salad. Julane will be remembered for her positive attitude, always making the best of any situation. She lived with diabetes for 60 years. She had a great sense of humor and was known for her quick wit. A friend to everyone, Julane had a very caring attitude, helping and serving others even as a resident of the care center where she also served on the senior advisory committee. You never heard Julane complain or say a bad word about anyone. As a devoted wife and mother, her family always came first.

Julane is survived by her sons, Jerry (Jean) of Hampton, and Del (Dorothy) of Parkersburg; daughter Diane (Ron) Dougherty, of Ankeny; grandchildren, Jerilyn (Kole) Kapp, of Rockingham, N.C., Jaci (Mike) Sinclair, of Marshalltown, Jay (Sheila) Carolus, of Oskaloosa, Darin (Nancy) Carolus, of Reno, Nev., Colin (Jenny) Carolus, of Vinton, Grant (Holly) Carolus, of Waterloo, Jen (Joel) Eddleman, of West Des Moines, and Jill (Todd) Sears, of Overland Park, Kan.; 19 great-grandchildren; six great-great-grandchildren; brothers, Helmer Osheim, of Lake Mills and Vernon (Lorraine) Osheim, of Thompson; numerous nieces and nephews.
