WILLIAM SPAINHOWER, 54, KAMIAH-AREA RESIDENT

GLENWOOD, Idaho William M. Spainhower, a Kamiah-area businessman, died of a self-inflicted gunshot wound Thursday at his residence at Glenwood, east of Kamiah. He was 54. He was born July 18, 1939, at Clarion, Iowa, to William M. and Gladys Anderson Spainhower. He grew up and attended schools at Clarion, and entered the U.S. Navy in the late 1950s. After his discharge from the Navy he learned the building construction trade in the San Francisco Bay Area, where he lived and worked before moving to Kamiah in 1972. He purchased the Gamble's store at Kamiah, which he operated until selling the store and moving to Boulder, Mont. in the late 1970s. At Boulder he opened a Sears catalogue store and worked in construction. He owned and operated a building contruction business there. In 1983 he moved to Glasgow, Mont., where he took over the operation of a Sears catalogue store. He returned to the Kamiah area in 1990, and had owned and operated an excavation and trucking business since.

He married Carol Reiter June 21, 1991, at Coeur d'Alene. The couple purchased property at Glenwood, where he had lived since. He was an avid hunter and fisherman, and enjoyed horses and all outdoor activities, including skiing and snowmobiling.

Survivors include his wife of Kamiah; two sons, Bill Spainhower of Chinook, Mont, and Travis Spainhower of San Diego, Calif.; a daughter, Dawn Tucker of Gustine, Calif.; his mother of Clarion; a sister, Barbara Hanus of Webster City, Iowa; two brothers, Jerry Spainhower of Flagstaff, Ariz., and Charles of Honolulu, Hawaii; and five grandchildren. The funeral will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday at Trenary Funeral Chapel at Kooskia, with the Rev. Kelly Limeberry officiating. Burial will follow at the Kamiah Cemetery.
