HANOVER, Illinois--Harland Russell Speer, 93, of Chesterfield, Mo., formerly of Hanover, Illinois died Wednesday, July 23, 1997, at Friendship Village West. Services and burial were in Goldfield, Iowa. The Krieg-shauser West Mortuary, St. Louis, and Kastler-Babcock-Willim Funeral Home, Eagle Grove, Iowa, were in charge of arrangements.

Harland Russell Speer was born November 4, 1903 in Hanover and was the son of Robert James and May (Speer) Speer. He graduated from Hanover High School in 1921. He graduated from Monmouth College in 1926 and received his master’s degree from Washington University, St. Louis in 1948. He married Frances French on August 3, 1927 and two children were born to this union: Gordon Speer and Roberta (Speer) Parkinson. Harland began teaching mathematics in Marissa High School in 1926 and later was a teacher and assistant principal at Hanley Junior High School in University City, Missouri until his retirement in 1969. Harland’s wife Frances died October 22, 1986. Harland was living in Chesterfield, Missouri when he died July 23, 1997. He is buried in Goldfield, Iowa.
