MASON CITY - Robert "Bob" D. Mahoney, 74, of Mason City, died Sunday (April 27, 2008) at the Muse Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit. A Mass of Christian burial will be held 10 a.m. Thursday, May 1, at St. Joseph's Catholic Church, 302 Fifth St. S.E., with the Rev. Kenneth Gehling officiating. Interment will be in Elmwood-St. Joseph Cemetery. Visitation will be from 4 to 7 p.m. Wednesday, April 30, at Major Erickson Funeral Home, 111 N. Pennsylvania Ave. A rosary service will be held at 6:30 p.m., followed by a scriptural wake service. Memorials may be directed to the Hospice of North Iowa.

Bob was born Aug, 9, 1933, on a farm near Westgate, Iowa. He was the son of John and Lillie (Grose) Mahoney and the third of five children. He attended school at Westgate Public School and graduated from Maynard Consolidated High School in 1951. He graduated from Iowa State University in 1955 with a bachelor of science degree in animal husbandry. After college, Bob served in the U.S. Army as the reception officer of the Post Visitor's Bureau at Fort Bliss, Texas. He was honorably discharged from active duty and his reserve obligation with a rank of first lieutenant.

On Aug. 29, 1959, Bob was united in marriage to Marlene Campbell at St. Columbkilles Church in Varina, Iowa. They lived in Clarion for a short time and then moved to Mason City in 1966.

Bob spent his entire career as a salesman in the agricultural and transportation industries. He was a member of St. Joseph's Catholic Church and the Knights of Columbus. Bob enjoyed camping over the years as his children were growing up. His greatest interest was in meeting and visiting people. He enjoyed reading, fishing and traveling to many places in the United States and foreign countries. He especially enjoyed traveling with the 1st Citizens Heritage Club. Bob's greatest joy was spending time with his children and grandchildren. He took great interest and pride in their lives and achievements.

Bob is survived by his wife of 48 years, Marlene, and four children: Karen Bryan and husband, Curt (Seattle, Wash.), Cheryl Ahrenstorff and husband, Neal (Lakeville, Minn.), Colleen Coleman and husband, Patrick (Chicago, Ill.), and Craig Mahoney and wife, Michelle (West Des Moines). He is also survived by eight grandchildren: Carter, Daniel and Henry Bryan, Haley and Jordan Ahrenstorff, Daniel Coleman and John and Matthew Mahoney; his brother, Ray Mahoney and wife, Sue, of Oelwein; sister in-law, Gladys Mahoney of Oelwein; sister and brother in-law, Kathleen and Lew Smith of Ankeny, and numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, brothers, Edward, Don and twin brother, Roy, at birth, and his mother and father in-law.
