BELMOND — Curtis Norman Gabrielson, 83, passed away Monday (Sept. 21, 1998) at the Belmond Health Care Center. Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at the Trinity Lutheran Church, Belmond, with the Rev. James Carpenter officiating. Interment will be in the Belmond Cemetery. Visitation will be held from 4 to 8 p.m. Friday at the Dugger-Ewing Funeral Home, Belmond, and one hour prior to services on Saturday at the church.

Norman Gabrielson was born Feb. 23, 1915, in Belmond, Iowa, to Gabriel and Anna Peterson Gabrielson. The son of Norwegian immigrants was raised on a farm with his four brothers and four sisters. His love of land, farming and animals continued throughout his life. Norman grew up in the Belmond area where he attended country schools. He then moved to California where he managed a dairy farm in Glendale.

He met Marion Georgina Artiss and they were wed in 1939 in Glendale, Calif. Daughters, Constance Sue and Nancy Lee were born in 1941 and 1943 in California. The Gabrielson family returned to Belmond, where Norman farmed with his brother, Elmer, and eventually started his own farm. Daughter, Norma Jean, was born in 1948 and son, Ted Artiss, in 1949. He lost his wife Marion on March 19, 1954. Norman continued farming until 1958. In 1958, he married Alta Lee Smith, becoming father to her children, Vicki Lee (born 1945) and James Hackett (born 1948), and Jerry Allen (born 1949). He then began management of the Fashion Farms in Meservey, Iowa. The family moved to San Jose, Calif., in 1963, where they owned and operated three small businesses. In 1966, they moved to Redding, Calif., where Norman worked on a dairy farm, until his retirement. Alta and Norman returned to Belmond in 1980.

He is survived by his children, Nancy Lee Flanagan and her husband, Larry, of Harlan, Iowa; Norma Jean Thiel and her husband, Dick, of Las Vegas, Nev.; Ted Artiss Gabrielson and his wife, Donna, of Lake Oswego, Ore.; son-in-law, Fred Loats, of Belmond; stepsons, James Hackett Smith and his wife, Lynda, of San Ramon, Calif.; Jerry Allen Smith and Wendy, of Belmond; stepson-in-law, Jerry Soma, of Gilroy, Calif.; sisters, Elizabeth Waddington, of Belmond; Beulah Reasoner and her husband, Edward, of Belmond; and Ruby Boller and her husband, Kenneth, of Belmond; brothers, Gerhard and his wife, Marion, of Belmond; and Lester, of Des Moines; 22 grandchildren; and 27 great-grandchildren. Mr. Gabrielson was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Marion and mother of his four children; one daughter, Constance Sue Loats (1975); one stepdaughter, Vicki Lee Soma (1980); wife, Alta Lee (1984); grandson, Jeffrey Allen Loats (1986); sisters, Burlee Gabrielson and Ruth Boller; and brothers, Tolford and Elmer Gabrielson.
