Elsie Johnson, 99, died Sunday, February 3, 2008 at Ravenwood Nursing and Rehab Center in Waterloo, Iowa. Elsie was born January 23, 1909 to Carl and Marie Dangelowsky. She lived all but the last few years of her life in Fort Dodge. Elsie attended country school near Fort Dodge and graduated from Eagle Grove High School. She enrolled in the elementary education teaching program at the Iowa State Teachers College (now the University of Northern Iowa) in Cedar Falls and enjoyed a long career teaching first and second grade students. Elsie retired from teaching during 1974. Elsie married Merrill Johnson, and he preceded her in death January 1, 1972.

She was an active and life-long member of Grace Lutheran Church. Elsie also served on the Care Review Committee for Villa Care Nursing Home and was a member of the Fort Dodge Women's Club. Elsie displayed a love for learning all her life and one of her favorite pastimes was reading.

Elsie is survived by and will be sorely missed by her sisters, Irmgard Pingel of Waukee and Lillie Bauer of Waterloo, as well as her nieces and nephews. Family will be present at a visitation for Elsie, to be held Thursday, February 7, from 4 to 6 p.m. at Gunderson Funeral Home. Funeral services will be held 10:30 a.m. Friday, February 8, at Grace Lutheran Church with the Rev. Matthew Martens officiating. Interment will be held in North Lawn Cemetery.
