John Thomas (“Jack”) Comstock, the son of Roy and Gladys (Cowan) Comstock was born on December 14, 1921 on a farm near Thor, IA. He grew up in Eagle Grove, IA and attended the local schools. After serving in the U.S. Army during WWII, he continued his education at the University of Iowa where he earned his law degree as well as a Ph.D.

On December 26, 1946 he married Prudence Larson. The couple lived and raised their family in Sanborn, and it was there that Jack established his law practice. He became actively involved in many aspects of the Sanborn community. In addition to being the city attorney, he served two terms as mayor. He was a strong supporter for the construction of the swimming pool, and was involved in the installation of the (infamous) red sidewalks in town. He was a troop leader for both Cub Scouts and Boy Scouts. He also enjoyed taking his family on vacations to Lake Okoboji. In March of 1987, Prudy passed away. The following year Jack retired and began spending the winter months in Arizona.

On June 22, 1990, Jack married Vivian (Olson) Muth. The couple divided their time between summers at Okoboji, IA and winters in Apache Junction, AZ. He was an avid reader, and enjoyed fishing and golfing until his health began to decline during the fall of 2007. While under the care of Hospice, he passed away at the Milford Nursing Home on December 19, 2007 at the age of 86.

He is survived by his wife Vivian of Milford, IA; a son Chuck Comstock and his wife Jacque of Altoona, IA, a daughter Lynne Lanphere and Lyle Yackley of Worthington, MN; four grandchildren, six great-grandchildren; his step-children and their families: Sharon and Jerry Latimer, Cindy and Larry Cote, and Keith and Lori Muth; 11 step grandchildren and 9 step great-grandchildren; as well as other relatives and friends. He was preceded in death by his parents, his first wife Prudence and two step brothers, Kenneth Comstock and Winfield Comstock.
