LEROY, NY -- Mrs. Frances M. Schmelzle, 92, died Thursday (May 10, 2001) at her home on Summit Street, after a brief illness.

Mrs. Schmelzle was born Dec. 17, 1908, in Eagle Grove, Iowa, a daughter of the late Andrew and Hanna Chalstrom Schmelzle. [sic] [Midland]

A 1929 graduate of Palmer College of Chiropractic in Davenport, Iowa, she married Dr. Raymond Tooley Schmelzle, a well-known chiropractor in Batavia, in 1935. That year they also moved to Le Roy and started their practice. She was president of the Chiropractic Auxiliary, former chairman of the Le Roy Red Cross, organizer of the Town and Country Garden Club and past officer of District 17, a member of the First Presbyterian Church of Le Roy and former member of the board of directors of the Young Men's Christian Association at the time the new building was being constructed. She and her husband were world travelers, and enjoyed sharing their experiences. The couple moved from Le Roy to Griswold Road, Batavia, and then to Florida, where he died in 1992. She moved back to Le Roy in 1994 to live with her daughter and son-in-law.

Surviving are three children, Dr. Richard (Laurine) Schmelzle of Toronto, Sonja (Joseph) Simpson of Penn Yan and Linda Kay (Dennis) Beaumont of Le Roy; seven grandchildren; and 10 great-grandchildren.

Friends may attend a memorial service at 1 p.m. Thursday at the First Presbyterian Church of Le Roy. Burial will be in Cowlesville Cemetery at the convenience of the family. Memorials may be made to the Town and Country Garden Club, P.O. Box 37, Le Roy; or to First Presbyterian Church of Le Roy. Arrangements were completed by the Cameron, Brady and Steuber Funeral Home.
