Jake Joseph Roskup, 76, 830 E. Fairchild St, Iowa City, died Monday July 10, 2006 in his home following a long illness. Funeral Mass will be celebrated Thursday July 13th, 2006 at 10am at St. Mary’s Catholic Church. Father Jeff Belger and Father Michael Phillips will co-officiate. Burial with Military Rites provided by the Iowa City American Legion Post #17 will be at St. Joseph Cemetery. Friends may call from 4 to 8 PM, Wednesday at Lensing Funeral & Cremation Service, 605 Kirkwood Ave, where a rosary will be recited at 4:30pm and a Parish Vigil Service will be held at 7:00pm. In lieu of flowers, a general memorial fund has been established in Jake’s name.
Jake was born on April 23, 1930 in Belmond, IA to Joseph and Pauline Winters Roskup. He attended St. Patrick’s School in Iowa City. Jake served in the United States Army from 1947 till 1950. He married Phyllis Chaloupka, his childhood sweetheart, on June 9, 1950 at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Iowa City. Jake worked for the City of Iowa City as the Sanitation Superintendent and at the Amana Refrigeration Plant as a Inspector. He was a member of the Moose Lodge, St. Mary’s Catholic Church, and Iowa City American Legion.
Jake is survived by his wife Phyllis, two children; Daniel (Twyla) of Sioux Falls, SD, Denise Halter (Leonard) of Iowa City, a sister; Rosemary Dahnke of Iowa City, seven grandchildren; Karina, Krystal, Kristopher, Kendra, Jason, Amy and Eric, a great-grandson Riordan and Jake’s dog Katy. He was preceded in death by his parents, four brothers; Andrew, Peter, Joseph and Edward, four sisters; Paulina, Mary Oesterricher, Pauline Coder, Katherine, and a son David. His family, friends, faith, and the Iowa Hawkeyes were the driving forces and his passion in life.
