Esther L. Brayton, 98, of Heritage Manor, formerly of 2121 Lincoln, died Sunday, July 30, 2006. Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Thursday at Siegert-Casper Colonial Funeral Home, 390 N. Grandview Ave., where friends may call from 4 to 7 p.m. today. Burial will be in Dubuque Memorial Gardens.

She was born on April 16, 1908, in Hardy, Iowa, daughter of Abner and Lela (French) Rummens. She married Fay M. Brayton on Aug. 29, 1926, in Hardy, Iowa; he preceded her in death on Aug. 10, 1969. She volunteered at The Finley Hospital, Dubuque, until 1988, and also with the RTA. Esther enjoyed playing games and loved to travel on bus tours. She also liked to dine out with family and friends whenever possible. Esther loved touring with the Kitchen Band "The Hot Shot Band."

Surviving are four sons, Robert (Bonnie) Brayton, of Eagle Grove, Iowa, Gerald (Glenna) Brayton, of Katy Texas, Alan D. (Rima) Brayton, of San Diego, and Ronald (Carol) Brayton, of Dubuque; 11 grandchildren, Bill, Cindy and Dale Brayton, of Eagle Grove, Linda (Randy) Lincoln, of Hermitage Tenn., Jeff (Shawn) Brayton, of Jacksonville, Fla., Sue (Carl) Fry, of Hazel Green, Wis., Jane (Mark) Berning, Dennis (Sue) Brayton, and Karen (Scott) Schneider, all of Dubuque, Doug (Diana) Brayton, of Coralville, Iowa, and Jim (Lynne) Brayton, of Evansdale, Iowa; seven step-grandchildren, Stephanie Taylor, of Ontario, Calif., Cletus Rowan Jr., of Waterloo, Iowa, Joe Rowan, of Cedar Falls, Iowa, Loras Rowan, of South Carolina, and Sandy (Steve) Coltes, Patty Rowan and Luella Bartolatta, all of Dubuque; and six great-great-grandchildren and 18 step-great-grandchildren. She also was preceded in death by a son, Richard Brayton, in 1990; six sisters; and three brothers.

Memorials may be given to Hospice of Dubuque. The family would like to thank the nurses and staff at Heritage Manor for their wonderful care given to Esther.
