Margaret M. Garland passed away peacefully on Friday, September 7, 2007 in Whittier, CA. A funeral Mass to celebrate her life will be held on Thursday, September 20, 2007 at 10 a.m. at St. Augustin Catholic Church in Des Moines with burial to follow at 2 p.m. at Calvary Cemetery in Eagle Grove, Iowa.

Margaret was born and raised in Eagle Grove, the daughter of Thomas P. (Tom) and Ellen (Nell) Garland. She moved to Des Moines in 1931. Margaret was a respected legal secretary for the Comfort and Comfort Law Firm, which later became the Nyemaster, Goode, McLaughlin, Emery and O'Brien Law Firm. She worked for Frank B. Comfort and John J. McLaughlin and was with the firm for 48 years. Margaret retired to continue her full life that included golf, bridge, music, entertaining friends and travel (especially her trip to Ireland). She remained a faithful and active member of St. Augustin Catholic Church. Margaret lived in Des Moines until she moved to California in 1998 to be near her nieces and their families.

Margaret was preceded in death by her parents; siblings, Kathryn Hennig of North Dakota, Gertrude Crowley of California and Thomas Garland, Jr. of Iowa; and a nephew, Thomas Hennig of Illinois. She is survived by her nieces; Mary Garland Lofy of Arizona, Ellen Knuff and Mary Ann Masek both of California; along with several great and great-great-nieces and nephews.

Affectionately known as Auntie Marg, her family will always remember her kindness in helping others, love of life, spirit of adventure and vitality in enjoying each new day. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Bishop Drumm Care Center.
