FORMER HEAD OF MARMION ABBEY IS DEAD

Father Brown Named Emeritus in 1959

The Very Rev. Benedict Brown, 89, prior-emeritus of Marmion Abbey, Aurora, died yesterday in St. Joseph Mercy hospital, where he had been admitted March 3. Father Brown was born in Rowan, Ia. The family moved to Nebraska and later to South Dakota. He was ordained June 17, 1905, and served as assistant rector of St. Meinrad seminary in Indiana. He was prior from 1930 to 1938 in St. Meinrad's archabbey. Instructor at Academy; In 1938 he became an instructor in Marmion Military academy, Aurora. Three years later he was appointed pastor in St. Mary's church, Huntingburg, Ind. He returned to Aurora in 1947 as a founding member of the Marmion abbey. He became the prior and served in that capacity until 1959 when he became prior-emeritus.

Celebrates Golden Jubilee

Father Brown celebrated the golden jubilee of his monastic profession Sept. 18, 1950, in Marmion. Mass will be said at 11 a.m. tomorrow in the Marmion abbey chapel. The requiem mass will be celebrated by the Rt. Rev. Gerald Bankert, abbot of Marmion. Burial will be in the abbey cemetery. Surviving is a sister, Mrs. R. J. Hering.
