Esther Mae Aus, 83, a longtime Chicago-area nurse, died Thursday in an Iowa hospital. Ms. Aus, an Iowa native, became a registered nurse in 1932 and joined the former Lutheran Deaconess Hospital in Chicago in 1940. She stayed there until 1968, when she joined the staff of Lutheran General Hospital in Park Ridge. Ms. Aus retired in 1975 and moved back to Iowa in 1987. Ms. Aus is survived by three sisters and two brothers. Services will be at 10 a.m. Monday in Evangelical Lutheran Church in Eagle Grove, Iowa.

Sister Esther Mae Aus, 83, a longtime Chicago nurse, died Thursday at Trinity Regional Hospital in Ft. Dodge, Iowa. Sister Aus was born in Lyon County, Iowa. She graduated from Dickinson State Normal in North Dakota and earned her registered nursing degree at the Bismarck, N.D., Evangelical Hospital School of Nursing in 1932. She received her deaconess training at Deaconess Hospital in Chicago in 1940, moving from there to Park Ridge in 1968, where she worked at Lutheran General Hospital. She retired in 1975, but served as an active member of the board at the hospital until she moved to Eagle Grove, Iowa, in 1987, where she resided at the time of her death. Sister Aus was a member of the Lutheran Institute of Ecology and had served as president of the American Lutheran Directory of Deaconess for Chicago and Minneapolis.

Survivors include two brothers, Wilmer Aus and Merle Aus, and three sisters, Blanche Bundy, Thelma Dietz and Shirla Olson. Services and burial will be held today in Eagle Grove.
