Iris Ione (Cummings) OPPEDAHL

CUMMINGS, OPPEDAHL, MAYO, THENO, JANSSEN, SCHLICHTEMIER

Iris Ione Oppedahl was born on Feb. 2, 1922, at Lytton, Iowa, to Raymond and Vera Mayo Cummings. She received her early education in Lytton and graduated from the Manson High School, Manson, Iowa, in 1939. Iris attended the Iowa State Teacher’s College in Cedar Falls, Iowa and received her Teaching Certificate. She taught school in Webster City, Iowa and then taught in the Renwick Public School. Iris moved back to Manson to help her father at his Grocery and Dry Goods Store for a time and then moved back to Renwick. Iris was married to Robert L. Oppedahl on August 31, 1947, at Sioux City, Iowa. The couple lived in Renwick, where they raised their family and Iris was a substitute teacher until the school was dissolved. Iris was a member of the Lake Lutheran Church, where she was a former Sunday School Teacher, former secretary of the Church Council and belonged to the various womens’ groups. She enjoyed knitting, working on genealogy and collecting dolls, but her greatest joy in life was her grandchildren. She loved watching them participate in all of their activities. Iris belonged to the Library Board, the Literary Guild and the American Legion Auxiliary in Renwick.

Iris died on Monday, May 28, 2007, at the Long Term Care Center of the Humboldt County Memorial Hospital in Humboldt, Iowa, where she had been a resident for about one year. She was 85. Surviving are her children, Paula Theno, Modesto, Calif., and Kevin Oppedahl and wife, Kathy, Renwick, Iowa. Also surviving are three grandchildren, David Theno and wife, Jenny, Dunsmuir, Calif., Kacie Janssen and husband, Nick, Des Moines, Iowa, Kody Oppedahl, Renwick, Iowa; and two great-grandchildren, Fiona and Rowan. Iris is also survived by her sister, Gloria Schlichtemier and husband, Dr. Jim, Omaha, Neb.; and her brother, Duane Cummings and wife, Bette, Sun City, Ariz. She was preceded in death by her parents and her husband, Robert.

Funeral services are 10:30 a.m. Thursday, May 31, 2007, at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church, Renwick, Iowa, with Lynn J. Noel and Pastor Stan Peterson officating. Visitation is 5 to 7 p.m. Wednesday at Garry-Roberts-Murphy-Schaaf Funeral Home, Renwick, Iowa. Interment in Lakeview Cemetery, rural Goldfield, Iowa.
