Funeral services for Hortense Elizabeth Meier, 67, were held Tuesday afternoon at 1:45 o'clock from the Schultz Funeral home to St. Paul's Ev. Lutheran church at 2 o'clock with Rev. R. C. Schlueter officiating. Burial was in St. Paul's Lutheran cemetery.

Miss Meier died at her home Saturday afternoon, May 24, 1952, after a short illness. As Hortense Elizabeth, she was born the daughter of Charles F. and Mary Wahls Meier, Jan. 18, 1885, near National. After graduation from McGregor high school, she taught one year in the public schools of St. Olaf and two years at Farmersburg. At this time she continued her education, receiving a master of didactics degree at Iowa State Teachers college, Cedar Falls, and a bachelor of philosophy degree at the University of Chicago. She had many happy and successful years of teaching and supervising in the high schools of Clarksville, New Hampton, Clarion, and Iowa City. From those who knew her best and who judged wisely, she received the pronouncement, "A great teacher and leader of young men and women." What she prized most highly in her life of teaching was her work in the Sunday school at St. Paul's Lutheran church in Monona, where she served every year from 1935 to December, 1951.

She is survived by three sisters, Leona Meier and Mrs. L. D. Daly of Rockford, Ill., and Mrs. George Vollmer of Milwaukee, Wis.; and one brother, Dr. G. G. Meier of Clarion.

Music at the services was provided by Miss Eleanor Schlueter, soloist, Mrs. George Heins was the organist. Pallbearers were: Louis Mueller, Lloyd Brownson, Lloyd Drahn, W. B. Wiethorn, W. C. Kruse, LeRoy Hoth, Dean Schultz, and John Luepker.
