22 January 1921 - 11 September 1984

ALGONA - Richard P. Henely, 63, Algona, died Tuesday [September 11, 1984] following a cardio-vascular failure, in St. Vincent Island, Kingstown, West Indies, where he was employed by the United States Aid for International Development. Funeral services will be at noon Monday at St. Cecelia's Catholic Church in Algona, with military rites at Calvary Cemetery in Algona by the American Legion and VFW posts of Algona. Friends may call at the Wilson Funeral Home after 2 p.m. Sunday where there will be a Legion of Mary rosary at 3 p.m., a parish rosary at 7:30 p.m., and a scripture reading at 8 p.m. A private family service will be held at 11:30 a.m. Monday.

Survivors include his wife Jorine of Algona; five sons, Richard of Omaha, Ronald of Lexington, Neb., Michael of Phoenix, Ariz., Patrick of Denver, Colo., and Paul of Forest City; two daughters, Mrs. Michael (Christine) Koehler, Waverly, and Mrs. Mary Smith of Louisville, Ky., 14 grandchildren, and his mother, Mrs. Madeline Henely of Clarion; two brothers, Robert of Cedar Rapids and Raymond of Des Moines.

He was born in Clarion and the family lived in several different communities in central Iowa. He graduated in Humboldt High School in 1939, attended Notre Dame University for two years and graduated from the University of Iowa in 1942 in business Administration. He served in the U.S. Navy and was discharged in 1945. He graduated as an engineer from Iowa State University in 1951. Mr. Henely had been county engineer in Winneshiek County and had been Kossuth County Engineer for 10 years. He had been employed by the U.S. government in overseas projects for several years, and most recently involved with the U.S. AID in St. Vincent Island, West Indies.
