Robert E. Schmidt of rural Grafton died Wednesday, December 25. At the time he was in the Veterans Administration Hospital in Iowa City. Funeral services were held Saturday, December 28 at the Emmanuel Lutheran Church, Grafton with the Rev. Gregory Bjornstad officiating. Burial was in the Grafton Cemetery with graveside military rites by Grafton American Legion Post 616.

Robert was 59 years old, born July 25, 1932 at Hayfield, Minnesota to Marvin and Gladys Graper Schmidt. He graduated from Clarion High School in 1951. He served four years in the Navy and married Phyllis Trettin April 25, 1954 in Grafton. They had three daughters, Vicki, Robin and Kimberly. "Schmitty" as he was known to his friends, was a farmer who also worked for Crystal Sugar in Mason City. In the past he worked for David Manufacturing for 17 years. He was very active in the church and legion. He was an avid Hawkeye, Twins and Viking fan. Robert loved to spend time fishing, especially with his grandchildren. But, most of all Schmitty will probably be remembered for the great stories that he loved to tell.

Survivors include his wife, Phyllis of Grafton; three daughters, Mrs. James (Vicki) Kroneman, Osage; Mrs. Duane (Robin) Tabbert, Grafton; and Mrs. Mike (Kimberly) Spitz, Osage; one sister, Mrs. Melvin (Judith) Westcott of Savannah, Georgia and one brother, Leslie Schmidt, Georgetown, Kentucky; five grandchildren, Keith, Tim and Melinda Kroneman and Kyle and Troy Tabbert. He was preceded in death by his parents.
