INDEPENDENCE - Memorial services for Clara Evelyn Stewart will be 10 a.m. Saturday, June 13, at the Reiff Funeral Home, Independence, with the Rev. Aloysius Vorwald officiating. Graveside services were held at noon Friday at the Memory Garden Cemetery, Iowa City. Mrs. Stewart, 88, died Tuesday evening, June 9, 1998, at Covenant Medical Center, Waterloo, following a short illness. She was born Oct. 19, 1909, in Alexander, Kan., the daughter of Edward D. and Emma (Napereny) Stafford. She attended Alexander schools. She married Harold Stewart and the couple later divorced. Mrs. Stewart resided in Clarion and Iowa City, prior to moving to Independence in 1995. She had been a dietitian with fraternities and sororities in Iowa City prior to her retirement in 1984.

Survivors include two daughters, Grace Acosta of Jewell and Beverly Wason of Waterloo; nine grandchildren; and several great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents; six brothers, Edward, John, James, William, Clyde and Richard Stafford; and one sister, Emma Stafford.
