Robert A. "Bud" Streit, 69, of 228 10th Ave S.W, Oelwein, died Sunday evening, Aug. 17, 1997, at his home after a long illness. A graveside military memorial service will be held at 10 a.m. Thursday, Aug. 21, in Woodlawn Cemetery, Oelwein. The service will be conducted by the Oelwein American Legion Ross Reid Post 9. The Jamison-Schmitz Funeral Home, Oelwein, is in charge of arrangements.
He was born Jan. 8, 1928, in Clarion, the son of John and Blanche (McCallum) Streit. He attended Oelwein High School. When he was 15 he enlisted in the United States Marine Corps. He fought in several major invasions in the South Pacific while serving in the Fourth Marine Division, Saipan, Tinian, Roi and Iwo Jima. He was wounded twice in action before he was 16 years old and was awarded two purple hearts and several unit citations for service above the call of duty. On Jan. 31, 1956, he married Darlyn I. Ohl at Rock Island, Ill. Mr. Streit was retired from cash register and slot machine repair and sales. He was a member of the Ross Reid American Legion Post 9, Oelwein, and had served as the mayor of Waucoma. Survivors include his wife, Darlyn of Oelwein; and one daughter, Eveanna Streit of Oelwein. He was preceded in death by his parents and a brother, Jack Streit
