Mrs. Mary Eliza Batchelder, [nee Covey] a resident of Akron, Iowa and vicinity for fifty-six years, passed away at her home in this city at 5 o'clock Monday morning, May 22, 1927, at the advanced age of 87 years and 20 days. She had been gradually failing in health and strength for a long time and peacefully slept into eternity. Mrs. Batchelder was born May 3, 1840 at Fort Miller, Washington County, New York. She was united in marriage with Isaac Batchelder, June 5, 1859, at Sandy Hill, New York. To this union was born eleven children, six of whom remain to mourn her loss. Mr. Batchelder served in Co. B, 123rd Regiment, New York volunteers during the Civil War, and a few years after the close of the war they decided to move west, and in 1868 located at Belmond, Wright County, Iowa. In 1871 the family came to Union County, S.D. and settled on a homestead seven miles northwest of Akron. In 1890 they moved to this city, which has been the family home since. Mrs. Batchelder united with the church at the age of nineteen and has been a devout follower of her Master. She received into the Akron Baptist church, Oct 8, 1884, and became one of its loyal supporters. She was a kind and loving wife, a mother who gave herself in the rearing of the family without thought of self, ever willing to make a personal sacrifice to the benefit of others. Her husband preceded her in death May 6, 1916.

She is survived by three sons and three daughters: David, of Oakland, Calif; N.A. of Los Angeles, Calif; John, of Akron; Mrs. Eunice Frost of Chicago, Ill, Mrs. Alice Husted of Rapid City, S.D.; and Mrs. Jennie Tresler of Akron; also 42 grandchildren and 47 great grandchildren. They have the sympathy of many friends in their bereavement.

Funeral services were held Wednesday afternoon at 2:30 o'clock in the Baptist church conducted by Rev. A.L. Macmillan. The W.R.C. attended the service in a body. Interment was in Riverside Cemetery. Relatives coming from a distance to attend the funeral were: Mrs. Warren Husted of Rapid City, S.D.; Mr. And Mrs. Walter Tresler, of Canton, S.D.; Mrs. Willard Peterson, Eddie Tresler, and Paul Hendricks, of Yankton, S.D.; Mrs. Albert Covey and Chas. Lewison and family of Jefferson, S.D.; Mrs. Pocklington, Merrill Pocklington, Mrs. Maggie Blomberg, Mrs. Maggie Youngkin, of Hawarden; Mrs. Albert Husted and Mrs. Louise Moran, of Sioux City.
