Ruth Hackbarth, 97, of Iowa Falls, died Wednesday, Feb. 14 at the Metropolitan Medical Center in Des Moines.Services were held Saturday, Feb. 17 at the Surls Funeral Home in Iowa Falls with burial in Morgan Cemetery, rural Dows. Rev. Don Preston officiated. Ruth was born Nov. 13, 1903, on a farm near Geneva to Edwin and Alice Richards Sheppard. After graduating from high school she earned a teaching certificate after two years at Cornell College. She was a pioneer in teaching in rural county schools for over 40 years, mostly in the Iowa Falls and Geneva area. She married Elmer Hackbarth in Hampton. Ruth was a member of the Iowa Falls Methodist Church.
She is survived by a son, Larry Hackbarth of Bridgewater; three grandchildren, Holly Trulson of Britt, Hal Hackbarth of Pleasant Hills, and Heather Hackbarth of West Des Moines; and four great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband in 1967; and a sister, Edna Sheppard.
