October 12, 1934 - February 9, 2004

Merle L. Hartkopp, 69, of Popejoy died Monday, Feb. 9, 2004, at Mary Greeley Medical Center in Ames. Funeral services will be Saturday, Feb. 14, at 11 a.m. at the First Lutheran Church in Dows with Rev. Paul Thompson officiating. Burial will be in the Alden Cemetery in Alden.

Merle was born Oct. 12, 1934, at the family farm north of Popejoy to Walter and Edna (Gardalen) Hartkopp. He graduated from Popejoy High School in 1953. Merle served in the U.S. Army. On May 7, 1955, he was united in marriage to Martha Bennett at Waynesville, Mo. Merle had been a farmer and was employed by Electrolux in Webster City, retiring in 2000. He was a member of the First Lutheran Church. Merle enjoyed gardening, listening to Paul Harvey, playing with his grandchildren and was called the "gator man."

Survivors include his wife, Martha, of Popejoy; two sons, Matthew and wife Robin of Iowa Falls and Monte and fiancée Tracey of Popejoy; one daughter, Marcia Hartkopp and partner Alicia of Teaneck, N.J.; nine grandchildren; and a sister-in-law, Arlene Rowland of Ankeny. He was preceded in death by his parents; a son, Michael; and a brother, Orville.
