Dorothy M. Stevens, the daughter of Lloyd and Hattie (Everhardt) Stevens, was born in the Swaledale Burchinal area in Cerro Gordo County, the eldest of four girls. She attended Swaledale Schools, graduating in the largest class of Swaledale High School prior to its conglomeration with Rockwell. Dorothy was united in marriage to Laurence "Babe" McKinley Walrod on Oct. 11, 1947, at the Methodist Church Parsonage in Thornton. Following their marriage they resided for a time with Dorothy's folks before moving to Sheffield and then later to Belmond. The couple's union, which lasted 46 years, was blessed with a daughter, Nancy. Babe preceded Dorothy in death on July 3, 1994. Dorothy was a lifelong hardworking and devoted wife and mother. She took great pride in providing for the needs and nurturing her family. She was a lady who enjoyed the simple things of life. She enjoyed anything that included time spent with her family. Those who knew her well will always remember her devotion to Babe and her love of her daughter, Nancy. She also had a special camaraderie with her son-in-law Dick. Whether a friend or acquaintance, those who crossed her footprints of life will remember her genuine kindness, her non-judgmental personality and her willingness to put others' needs before her own. A proud accomplishment she reached in the later years of her life was getting her driver's license following Babe's passing. Following a difficult diagnosis with her health, she moved to be near her daughter and be cared for at the Mercy Family Plus Health Facility in Oelwein in January of this year. While there she shared a mutual bond with the staff and enjoyed visits from Chaplain Mark and his dog, Kaylee. She enjoyed visits from her daughter and son-in-law and extended family.

Those left to cherish the memory of her life include her daughter, Nancy Green and husband, Richard "Dick," 727 Southlawn Court, Oelwein, IA 50622; her sisters, Donna Hopely and husband, Bill, rural Klemme, Doris Ann Flores and husband, Fredd, of Mason City, and Deloras Frohling and husband, Merle, of Meservey; a brother-in-law, Dale "Pinky" Walrod and wife, Nadine, of Belmond; and numerous nieces, nephews and other relatives. She was preceded in death by her parents, and husband Laurence "Babe" Walrod. Andrews Funeral Home.
