Edwin Ray Shahan, 74, of Belmond, passed away Monday (June 3, 1996) at the Belmond Community Hospital. Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. today at the Ewing Funeral Home with the Rev. Laurence Garrett officiating. Burial will be in Amsterdam Cemetery, Goodell. Visitation was held from 2 to 9 p.m. Wednesday at the Ewing Funeral Home.
Edwin was born on July 16, 1921, in Hickory Grove, the son of Lee and Mary Carter Shahan. He attended country schools. Edwin farmed near Hickory Grove for many years. On June 5, 1949, he was united in marriage with Gladys I. Mikesh. He then farmed on an acreage at the Old Mill Dam south of Rowan, and worked for A.R. Dorr and Sons Construction for 30 years. Edwin's treasured moments were when he worked at his work bench, building or repairing things. He also took delight in gardening, flowers and vegetables. He enjoyed analyzing the weather and was good at predicting it. Edwin loved watching a beautiful sunrise and sunset. He always knew what the weather would be like based on this and seeing changes in the animals he watched, squirrels and birds. Edwin built houses and feeders for these little friends.
Edwin is survived by his wife, Gladys; his children, Charles Krivachek and his wife, Lois, of Fort Dodge; Ronald Shahan and his wife, Linda, of Cedar Falls; Kathlyn M. Shahan of Honolulu, Hawaii; Edwin Shahan Jr. and his wife, Martha, of Clear Lake; 14 grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; two brothers, Stanley Shahan and his wife, Edith, of Ames, and Orville Shahan and his wife, Mikey, of Mesa, Ariz.; one sister, Ada Hughes of Clear Lake; two brothers-in-law, Charles Mikesh and his wife, Wanda, of Belmond, and George Mikesh and his wife, Emily, of Goodell; six sisters-in-law, Colina Haan and her husband, Bob, of Miller; Grace Zaspel of Goodell; Ruby Dwyer of Harper's Ferry; Connie Roley of Annadale, Minn.; Ardith Shahan and Dorothy Shahan. He was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers, Howard and Carol; an infant brother, Harry; and one sister, Lola Pals.
